How the Build It Green program prepared me for college

By Harlan Groves

In our interview with Build It Green (B.I.G.) program member and recent Chattanooga State graduate Tadarius McDaniel, we learned how he started his career in weatherization, high-performance building, and HVAC. In addition, he shares personal insight and valuable advice for those considering a career in construction.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in construction?

I felt like once I graduated high school, I didn’t have to go to school anymore, that I was done learning. But I saw there were trades that people were getting paid well for and that there were ways to make money the correct way. So I found a trade that I liked and others needed in their lives.

Why did you select HVAC/R specifically?

When I was a kid I was curious. I would play with race cars, and I would use the vents in my house as a race track. Then, I wondered why the vents were there, why they were so important, and why they connected different parts of a house. Today, I’m excited to become a HVAC/R technician because I want to provide a comfortable living for others.

What are your plans after you complete the Build It Green program?

In the long term, I aim to be self-employed. I also plan to help my community and the people in my environment by letting them know that you can learn a trade, make good money, and help many people. I’ll most likely start my own program to teach people willing to learn.

Lastly, If you could give yourself advice to the person you were 3 years ago, what would you say?

Books are your best friend. We learn things and forget them, and sometimes things go in one ear and out the other, but the words in a book are there forever. When I was studying at Chattanooga State, my books were always there for me, so I made it a habit to read them.
