Join green|spaces for our monthly lunch & learn! This month, we will focus on:

A State-Wide Overview of IECC Building Codes and Strategies for Efficiency Implementation

Tennessee is currently ranked as one of the states with the lowest residential building energy efficiency standards in the nation, and there are a number of limitations at the root of this reality. First, there are a limited number of Home-Energy-Rating-Service (HERS) raters to serve all counties in the state. Secondly, many builders and codes officials believe that building high-performance homes is unachievable with off the shelf products and that homes should breath and not be sealed to new standards. Lastly, there are dramatic inconsistencies among counties in adoption and implementing codes and it is that inconsistency that makes it difficult to move forward as a state.

In this lunch-and-learn, E3 INNOVATE will discuss strategies for successfully adopting more progressive building codes in Tennessee. This presentation will:

  • Introduce the development of a new online resource that helps organize the state's building codes and HERS raters

  • Provide a review of the changes made in IECC updates between 2009 and 2018, with attention to blower door and duct blaster testing

  • Provide an update on the number and distribution of HERS-rated and LEED-certified homes across the state

  • Offer insight on how to create more energy efficient homes with standard materials and practices

  • Provide ways in which builders can save time and money passing codes verification testing the first time, using examples from builders who regularly surpass code requirements

  • Share results from a home energy monitoring, comfort, and operational cost comparison study of two North Nashville homes

Learning objectives:

  • Understand differences in IECC code requirements between 2009 and 2018.

  • Learn effective ways to increase the pass rate for energy efficiency requirements

  • Learn effective building strategies that increase the energy efficiency of homes and reduce liability risks

  • Learn about the development of a new online resource for finding up-to-date building codes and HERS raters in Tennessee
