Empower Chattanooga's basic energy efficiency tips teach low cost and no cost changes to make around the house to save money on your utility bill. Empower Chattanooga is a grassroots initiative focused on connecting residents in East Chattanooga, Highland Park, East Lake and surrounding smaller neighborhoods to services and programs with an emphasis on increasing energy efficiency in the homes.

Switch to CFL or LED Lightbulbs

By switching to compact fluorescent (CFL's) or LED light bulbs  you can save between 75-90% CFL's and LEDs also last longer,  7-8 years, 25-30 years, respectively.

Clean Refrigerator Coils

Use a duster or wire brush to clean refrigerator coils twice per year. The coils are located either underneath or behind the refrigerator. You save about 6% on refrigeration cost by keeping your coils clean.

Unplug Appliances When Not in Use

Unplug appliances and other plug-ins when they're not in use.

Phantom Energy is the energy used in stand by mode. Unplug all your plugins when they're not in use. For places where there are multiple plugins use a power strip to make this task easier.

Be Smart With The Sun

In cooler temperatures make sure to allow the sunlight into the house to help with heating. Close the curtains or blinds once the sun sets to reduce heat loss through the windows. In warmer months block warm sunlight from warming up the house to help save on cooling cost.
